Michael Skinner

Lighting Designer

The Bluest Eye

Michael Skinner's set is simple but nicely representational, with eye-shaped benches and a mosaic floor design; and smudgy mirrors to reflect the idea that if we don't want to, we never had to see our true selves.

Be sure to notice the inventive set by Michael Skinner. It may take a minute for the symbolic associations to sink in.

Lawson Taitte - The Dallas Morning News

I was both the set and lighting designer for the production which was performed at Jubilee Theatre in Fort Worth, Texas. It was directed by Ed Smith, this is the second show we have done together. I feel we had a very successful collaboration on this project. To me this play was not only about the prejudice of others, but about how we see ourselves and each other.

My very talented assistant, Angelina Vyushkova and I personally painted the mosaic floor over a three day period. The idea for the floor came from Egyptian design and Roman mosaics, thus tying in the meaning that the importance we place on our perception of ourselves and of others is as old as history itself. The mirrors in the background are all focused at a downward angle so that from different places in the audience, you see not only different parts of the stage floor and the actors, but also members of the audience observing the show as you are.
